Allwyn Names Betsson’s Former CTO to Lead Its Next Digital Push
Fredrik Ögren will lead Allwyn’s technology strategy as the UK National Lottery moves beyond its biggest digital upgrade.
Allwyn appointed Fredrik Ögren as group chief technology officer on October 6, 2026. The former Betsson technology chief will lead the company’s next digital phase as it develops systems and products connected to the Fourth National Lottery Licence.
Ögren will report to Kresimir Spajic, chief executive of Allwyn Digital. Allwyn said he will shape the group’s technology strategy and create a more connected technology system across its markets.
The key test is whether Allwyn can turn its major digital investment into reliable services and safer experiences for National Lottery players.
Why the appointment matters in Britain
Allwyn operates the UK National Lottery under the Fourth Licence, formally awarded by the Gambling Commission in September 2022. The licence began in February 2024 and gives the operator greater flexibility to adapt products and systems while meeting its regulatory duties.
The appointment follows a major technology upgrade. In a speech published on October 2, 2026, Gambling Commission acting chief executive Sarah Gardner said Allwyn had delivered the largest technology upgrade in National Lottery history earlier in 2026.
Gardner described the digital cutover as a gateway to new products and product changes. She also said Allwyn had embedded new protections for every player using the National Lottery online or through its app.
A leadership change, not a new licence
Ögren joins Allwyn after five years as Betsson Group’s chief technology officer. Betsson lists him among its operations management team. Allwyn said he led technology strategy, large-scale platforms and international expansion across regulated markets during his time at the company.
The appointment does not change the National Lottery’s licence or the Gambling Commission’s role. It changes who leads the technology work behind Allwyn’s wider digital programme.
- Fredrik Ögren becomes Allwyn group chief technology officer.
- He will lead group technology strategy and platform development.
- Brett Cross will become chief technology officer of Global Lottery and deputy group chief technology officer.
- Cross will report to Ögren under the new structure.
What happens next
Allwyn said Ögren’s priorities include improving platform capabilities, supporting product development and creating a more consistent technology environment across its markets.
For British players, the practical question is whether future digital changes remain reliable and easy to use while meeting the protection standards expected under the Fourth Licence. The Gambling Commission has said participant protection must remain central as Allwyn introduces new products and changes.
Allwyn described the appointment as part of its next stage of growth. The company has not announced a specific new UK game or launch date alongside Ögren’s arrival.
