England Rout Greece 5-0 to Set Up Ukraine Play-Off in World Cup Race
The Lionesses won 8-1 on aggregate, but Ukraine now stands between England and the 2027 World Cup.
England reached the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-offs after beating Greece 5-0 at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.
Alessia Russo and Lauren James scored twice each. Georgia Stanway added the fifth as England completed an 8-1 aggregate victory and moved one step closer to the 2027 tournament in Brazil, according to the England Football match centre.
England turned a 3-1 first-leg advantage into an 8-1 aggregate win. Ukraine is now the final obstacle in the next play-off round.
England turned the tie into a rout
Russo opened the scoring in the third minute. James struck in the 16th minute and added another goal eight minutes later.
Stanway made it 4-0 before half-time. Russo completed her double in the 75th minute, leaving Greece with no way back into the contest.
The result settled the main question after England’s 3-1 first-leg win in Crete on Friday, 9 October. Sarina Wiegman’s side did not simply protect its advantage. It extended it in front of the home crowd.
Ukraine awaits in the next round
England will face Ukraine over two legs in the second play-off round. Ukraine advanced by beating Slovakia 4-1 on aggregate, Sky Sports reported.
The tie will decide which team continues towards a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. England have not qualified yet, but the 8-1 scoreline gives the Lionesses a significant platform for the next test.
