Flutter Entertainment has appointed Edward Traynor as interim group chief legal officer, putting the company secretary at the centre of legal and regulatory decisions affecting the group’s UK-facing brands. The appointment took effect on October 1, 2026, one day after Don Liu formally left the business, according to NEXT.io.

A legal handover at a sensitive moment

Liu resigned from Flutter’s board on September 28 and stepped down on September 30. He had taken the interim legal role in April 2025, initially for three months, but remained in the position for about 18 months before retiring again.

Traynor is combining the legal post with his existing role as Flutter’s group company secretary. He has held that position since April 2015. Flutter’s public leadership page now lists him under both titles.

Flutter has not announced a timetable for appointing a permanent group chief legal officer. Traynor will therefore handle the interim brief while the company manages legal, regulatory and governance demands across several major markets. NEXT.io reported that it contacted Flutter about the longer-term plan.

Why the UK connection matters

Flutter’s UK and Ireland portfolio includes Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Betting and Gaming and tombola. The company describes Sky Bet as a leading brand in the UK and Ireland. Its UK-facing business spans sports betting, casino, bingo, poker and exchange betting.

That makes the appointment more than an internal personnel change. Legal decisions involving licensing, advertising, customer protection, data use, payments and compliance can affect several familiar brands at the same time.

Flutter’s UK and Ireland operations also include Paddy Power’s retail estate, alongside online services. The group’s legal leadership must therefore cover both digital customers and physical betting shops.

For customers and operators, the immediate change is not a new licence rule or product launch. It is a change in who coordinates Flutter’s legal response across its UK-facing businesses.

What changes next

  • Edward Traynor now holds the interim group chief legal officer and group company secretary roles.
  • Don Liu’s departure became effective on September 30, 2026.
  • Flutter has not disclosed a public deadline for naming a permanent legal chief.
  • The group’s UK-facing brands remain Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Betting and Gaming and tombola.

The appointment does not itself change the rules governing Flutter’s brands. Its practical importance lies in the concentration of responsibility: one executive is now coordinating the group’s legal function while its major UK businesses continue operating in a tightly regulated gambling market.
