HMRC Sets September Date for Confirmed UK Betting Tax Figures
Provisional gambling receipts cover August 2025 to July 2026, with confirmed HMRC figures scheduled for 30 September 2026.
HM Revenue and Customs published provisional UK betting and gaming receipts data on 27 August 2026. The figures cover August 2025 to July 2026. The next confirmed release is scheduled for 30 September 2026 at 9:30am.
The data gives operators, investors and policymakers an early view of gambling duty receipts. It does not show final operator revenue, customer stakes or gross gambling yield.
What the figures measure
HMRC records receipts from seven gambling duty regimes administered by the tax authority:
- General Betting Duty
- Pool Betting Duty
- Remote Gaming Duty
- Gaming Duty
- Bingo Duty
- Lottery Duty
- Machine Games Duty
Most duties are linked to gambling profits or gross gambling yield, broadly the amount left after winnings are paid. Lottery Duty is based on stakes.
HMRC reports receipts on a cash basis. The figures therefore record when payments reach the Treasury, rather than when the underlying gambling activity takes place.
Why the September release matters
The August publication is provisional. The 30 September release is scheduled to provide confirmed figures for the latest reporting cycle and may revise earlier monthly amounts.
A rise in tax receipts would not, by itself, prove that customers placed more bets or that licensed operators generated higher revenue. Receipts can also reflect payment timing, duty rates and changes across gambling sectors.
Tax receipts, customer stakes, gross gambling yield and operator profit are separate measures. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
Separate from Gambling Commission market data
HMRC’s figures cover tax collection across the United Kingdom. They are separate from Gambling Commission statistics, which focus on gambling activity and operators licensed to serve consumers in Great Britain.
The two data sets answer different questions. HMRC shows how much gambling duty was received. Gambling Commission releases provide information on regulated activity, including gross gambling yield and participation.
What to watch on 30 September
- Whether provisional receipts are revised.
- How betting duties compare with remote gaming, lottery and machine games duties.
- Whether the reporting period shows a clear change from the previous year.
- How the figures relate to future Treasury tax policy and financial pressure on licensed operators.
The confirmed release will provide a stronger basis for assessing the tax contribution of Britain’s regulated gambling economy. Until then, the August 2025 to July 2026 figures remain provisional government receipts data, not a complete measure of betting demand or industry performance.
